House Rock Valley Road

House Rock Valley Road is a 14-mile unpaved road off US-89 that provides the only access to the Wire Pass Trailhead — the starting point for The Wave, Buckskin Gulch, and White Pocket. The road surface is clay-based and reacts dramatically to moisture.

Dry conditions

Passable 2WD

Most passenger vehicles can drive the road when completely dry. Go slow — sharp rocks, washboard sections, and deep dust. Not recommended for low-clearance vehicles.

After rain / during rain

4WD recommended or required

Wet clay becomes extremely slippery and muddy. 2WD vehicles will lose traction and can slide off the road. A single rain shower can make the road impassable for hours.

Snow / ice

Check before driving

Winter snowpack can make the road passable once packed, but icy sections form. Contact BLM Kanab (435-644-1200) the morning of your hike.

Rule: Never drive out without checking road conditions first

Reason: House Rock Valley Road can be impassable to all vehicles within 20 minutes of rain starting — conditions deteriorate faster than most people expect. Consequence: Getting stuck on a remote clay road with no cell service means a very expensive tow and a missed permit date. Call BLM Kanab (435-644-1200) or BLM Page before you leave the paved highway.

Flash Flood Risk

Flash floods in the Vermilion Cliffs area are a year-round risk, not just a summer-monsoon concern. Storms upstream can send walls of water through slot canyons and dry washes with no warning at ground level.

Rule: If any rain is forecast anywhere in the Paria River drainage, postpone your hike. Reason: The drainage area is enormous — storms 50+ miles away funnel water through narrow slots at The Wave and Buckskin Gulch. Consequence: Flash floods arrive without warning, move faster than a person can run, and can reach lethal heights within seconds. This is not a theoretical risk.

Check the National Weather Service forecast for Kanab and Page and look specifically for storm cells in a 100-mile radius before you hike.

Fire Closures

Wildfire closures in the Vermilion Cliffs and surrounding Grand Staircase–Escalante area are issued by the BLM and can take effect immediately. Fire closures can apply to the trailhead, House Rock Valley Road, and the broader wilderness area.
